I had a legendary interview with a specific legend from the Hamilton area. That certain someone happened to be Matt Walker from 92.9 The Grand! It was such an amazing time catching up with him and hearing from his experiences he had as a student in the Broadcasting-Radio program. With our semester coming to an end, most of my fellow classmates have had a tremendous time while being on air. I asked Matt about his time being on air with his group members, and he said he loved every second of it!  I agreed with Matt, especially with his type of work ethic, it shows that he loved being live during his first time in the Ignite Radio booth. He is a hard worker and loves to be on top of his tasks. That is one major key that I really like on what he brings to the table. He is a huge example of what a champion is, especially when you want to enter an industry where you are always on the go.

I also brought up some of the teachers he had while he was enrolled in the Broadcasting-Radio program. The best part is that he had most of the teachers who are currently in my semester right now, so it’s good to get his feedback on how he created great bonds with all the profs in the program. Matt Walker was actually one of the first industry professionals that I met this semester at Mohawk College.  He came to our class to chat and give us a tour of the college campus.  He offered some valuable feedback that stood out to me saying, “it’s important to reach out to the professors and get to know them." There is no question he was right with that! We agreed that Shiona Thompson is such a sweetheart and showing up to her classes and participating in the class mock newsrooms are crucial. It shows her that you care and how to excel in becoming a radio personality.  However, make no mistake about it, all the teachers in the Radio and Creative Content program are extremely amazing individuals.

Matt also explains how important it Is to apply for jobs around several radio stations, to get a foot in the door and start gaining radio experience. I explained to Matt about how I wanted to be on the street team and how awesome it would be to promote a radio station at big events. Him and I are classic rock fans, so to promote a specific radio station at a classic rock venue would be sensational. Even to this day he still loves to participate in the street crew position, so I was very upbeat when he told me to go and apply for the position. I told him that one of these days, he’ll see me driving around in an event cruiser.

Since Matt was about to leave for a phenomenal vacation, I thanked him for such and amazing interview and said that I hoped to interview him again soon, and he absolutely agreed! Overall, such an icon with an amazing personality. I guess that’s what happens when two legends collide!
